May 2/2026 Lindsay Buziak Murder – A good journalist must maintain the highest of standards when writing about a high-profile murder.

There’s a huge distinction between a courtroom and a blog.
A blog, such as “Murder on DeSousa,” often aim to connect circumstantial evidence (dots) that the legal system cannot use until they are verified. Murder on DeSousa” serves as a platform for public information and advocacy rather than a legal authority. The platform aims to bridge the gap between official silence and public awareness. According to this blog’s own mission statement and public discourse…..
It’s aim is to work in the public interest to seek justice for Lindsay Buziak. It acts as a repository for “verified” tips” and information that might not yet be admissible or prioritized in a courtroom. While investigators and the legal system must stick to strictly verified, admissible evidence, as they are suggesting, the public and blogs like Murder on DeSousa use information and patterns to draw multiple conclusions from verified recourse, information given and verified tips etc. Confirmed does not mean it aligns with the legal system, however, highlighting the importance of connections are indeed important when trying to get to the truth of what really happened.
It is especially understandable in cases where a murder has remained unsolved/no arrests for nearly 19 years. Without other evidence data, these connections can suggest knowledge or involvement enabling logical inferences. The emphasis on evidence forced by investigators warns against relying on unverified online sources and circumstantial links. That is why it is most important for a blog owner to do their research with due diligence, posting verified information while respecting the privacy of their sources.
Why does the public perception remain negative? The shady social circle of the Zailos shapes public perception – this evidenced by their direct ties to Ziggy Matheson & Chris Schwartz, (two convicted drug traffickers), and Greg Martel, a Ponzi-scheme fraudster who recently ran from Victoria after scamming friends, business associates etc. out of millions of dollars. Even if the Zailos aren’t criminals, the public tends to assume associating with criminals implies involvement in their activities. This continues to influence the perception of their public image.
Greg Martel, Chris Schwartz and Ziggy Matheson. Zailo associates.
Their criminal records are public information, therefore their associations with the Zailos should be considered pertinent to this case. The main issue is the emphasis on circumstantial associations rather than confirmed investigative findings. Secondly, associating with involved individuals can significantly impact mental health, leading to normalization of deviant behavior, increased risk-taking, moral erosion, stress-coping mechanisms, and possible desensitization to the violent personal of the relationship with that individual. Shirley Zailo stated that her relationship with Zachary Matheson (Ziggy) was that he was her tenant. As a professional realtor, she would typically perform due diligence (background checks, income verification,) that would have flagged someone like Ziggy himself).
The Capital Daily series did not offer definitive evidence
but it did document the Zailos proximity to criminal elements, which the Zailos have previously tried to minimize. The Capital Daily journalist Zander Sherman did a deep interview of both Jason & Shirley Zailo for that article. Some of their statements were clearly misleading/false and this left a public impression that they were withholding information, despite the Saanich Police having cleared their name in 2010. Lies, deception, and misleading police in an investigation could be identified as inferences that someone has knowledge of a crime. Or be involved in a crime. Following the evidence is the best way to seek the truth. Sometimes inferences can be drawn from lack of evidence as well. Drilling down to the fine details is important. This viewpoint suggests that the Zailo’s social and professional proximity to criminal elements is too significant to be coincidental.
While the Murder on DeSousa blog may have provided the initial platform for some speculation, the Capital Daily was the catalyst that confirmed several key details, adding weight to the public’s perception/suspicions. The evidence in the Lindsay Buziak case suggests a highly orchestrated, targeted murder. However, investigators remain deeply divided over whether the planning indicates a professional “hired hit” or a personal crime stated to look like one.
The methods of a journalist and a blogger do not follow the same protocol. A journalist must meet higher standards for the work he provides to the public. A good journalist acts as a guardian of fact, combining unrelenting curiosity with strict accuracy, ethical standards, and deep background research to serve the public interest. A top journalist such as Capital Daily’s Zander Sherman does just that.
A blog, such as Murder on DeSousa does not have to adhere to the same standards as a journalist. It is their job to raise awareness of a particular case, maintain credibility by showing their sources of information (ie newspaper articles etc, and doing their utmost to print what they believe to be the truth – or information that can lead to the truth.
A 2021 STATEMENT MADE BY THE SAANICH POLICE
While police have said………….”We believe people familiar with the circumstances surrounding this case remain in our community. It is sometimes the case that people who may have knowledge initially do not come forward due to their close relationship with those who may have been involved – or out of concern for their reputation and standing in the community and among friends. We recognize that relationships change over time as do people and their perspectives. It is not too late to come forward. Further, there are times when people are unknowingly brought into a situation by the person or persons responsible. Rest assured we have the ability to filter out innocent people and those whose role in the events was inadvertent.”
Well, it’s now 2026 and it appears this investigation is no further ahead than it was in 2021 when the Saanich Police were asking for the public’s help. One thing I do know for certain is that the “2” maybe more – current lead investigators on this case are dedicated to solving this heinous crime. However, as we all know, they take their orders from the Chief and their powers are limited as to what they can do, what they can say, and what information they have to withhold. As Lindsay’s friends, family and just people who care about justice, we can only hope that these investigators are pulling out all the stops to see that justice slaps the cuffs on those who have evaded prosecution for nearly 19 years.
